Question & Answer

1. Do I actually need braces or aligners?

Orthodontic treatment isn’t just about having a beautiful smile — it’s about improving how your teeth and jaws fit together. Braces or aligners can correct crowding, spacing, bite problems (like overbites or crossbites), and alignment issues that may affect your long-term dental health. During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your teeth, bite, and facial balance to determine if treatment will improve your health, comfort, and confidence.

2. What’s the difference between braces and clear aligners?

Both braces and aligners move your teeth gently into the ideal position, but they do it differently.

  • Braces use brackets and wires that stay on your teeth and are adjusted at each visit.

  • Clear aligners are removable trays that you wear about 22 hours a day, taking them out to eat and brush.
Both are highly effective — the right choice depends on your specific needs, goals, and lifestyle.

3. How long will treatment take?

Most orthodontic treatments last 12 to 24 months, but the exact time depends on the complexity of your case, how your teeth respond to movement, and how well you follow your instructions (like wearing aligners or elastics). We’ll give you a personalized estimate at your first visit and track your progress closely to help you stay on schedule.

4. Will it hurt or be uncomfortable?

You may feel mild soreness or pressure for a few days after braces are placed or when you switch to a new aligner — that’s a sign your teeth are moving! Most patients describe it as “tightness” rather than pain, and it goes away quickly. Over-the-counter pain relievers and soft foods can help in the first few days. We give each patient a device called a Dental Pain Eraser that through the use of sub sensory neuromodulation alleviates the soreness associated with tooth movement, aligners and orthodontic appliances.

5. What foods or habits should I avoid?

If you have braces, stay away from hard, sticky, or chewy foods — like popcorn, gum, caramel, or nuts — to avoid damaging your brackets or wires.
If you wear aligners, you can eat almost anything, but remember to remove them before meals and brush or rinse before putting them back in.
Chewing ice, biting nails, or opening things with your teeth are always off-limits!

6. How do I care for my teeth and aligners during treatment?

Good oral hygiene is essential.

  • With braces: Brush after every meal using a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and floss daily using a floss threader or water flosser.

  • With aligners: Rinse and brush your aligners with cool water and a gentle toothbrush. Do not use toothpaste because it is abrasive and can scratch. Always store them in their case when not in use.

7. Am I a good candidate for aligners or braces?

Most adults and some teens are candidates for aligners, especially for mild to moderate crowding or spacing. More complex cases — like severe bite issues, rotated teeth, or impacted teeth — may benefit from traditional braces or a combination of both. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your options and recommend what will give you the best result.

8. What happens after treatment? Will I need a retainer?

Yes! After treatment, retainers keep your teeth from shifting back. Everyone needs a retainer — it’s the final step in maintaining your smile. We’ll customize a plan for you, whether it’s a removable clear retainer or a small bonded wire behind your teeth.

9. How much will it cost, and does insurance cover it?

The cost of orthodontic treatment depends on the complexity of your case and which appliance you choose. At Alvetro Orthodontics, we make treatment affordable by offering flexible payment plans, family discounts, and automatic monthly payments. We use a company called Orthofi to make treatment even more affordable. Many insurance plans provide partial coverage for orthodontic care, and our team will help you maximize your benefits.

10. Can I still play sports, instruments, or do my normal activities?

Absolutely! Braces and aligners shouldn’t slow you down.

  • Sports: We recommend a custom mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces.

  • Musicians: Most adjust quickly and play comfortably after a short period of adaptation.

  • Daily life: Aligners are nearly invisible and removable, and braces become part of your routine in no time.

Your treatment is designed to fit your lifestyle — not the other way around.
